| Notes: Christian Science was created by
Mary Baker Eddy, and emphasizes spiritual existance rather than material.
In her writings, Mary Eddy teaches that material things are not real in
the sense that God is real, and thus sickness, disease, and death are not
"real" and can be healed through spiritual and mental means [literally
speaking, Christian Scientists believe that illness is "all in your head."] Because of their many drastic beliefs, Christian Science does not fit in with "mainstream" Christianity, but rather can be classified with "new-thought" or "mind-science" religions. These beliefs include their mind-over-matter view of life and spirituality, the denial of the physical death and resurrection of Christ, the denial of the doctrine of salvation, the denial of a physical Hell, and the denial of a physical Heaven. Christian Scientists have also received criticism for their beliefs regarding doctors and medical care. While it is not forbidden for members to receive care from Health institutes, it is highly shunned and many Christian Science parents refuse vaccinations, surgeories, and other forms of medical care for themselves and their children. Instead, conditions are treated strictly through prayer. Lastly, Christian Science has no connection with Scientology, and it should not be confused with theological, material or physical science.
