Everything You Need

Philippians 4:19 is one of the greatest promises God makes in the Bible. Since becoming a Christian I've always found it to be true, and have never lacked for anything.

The promise became most real in the 1980s, when I was a street preacher in Sydney, Australia. I'd given up full-time work to do evangelism, not knowing what the future held. For a short while I was living in one rented room, paid for out of meager savings, for I had no income.

Then, soon after: "Rod, we think there's a job for you. It fits in with what you want to do." So said the senior pastor of the city church I was attending. The offer was part-time work as a caretaker at a state-wide church HQ nearby. It was old, but in the heart of the downtown area.

They paid a small salary, I worked from 9am till around 11:30am doing odd jobs, then had the rest of the day to broadcast the message of God's love. I had to return at 5:30pm to lock up the premises. Wow, perfect for what I wanted to do. "I'll take it," I said.

A huge, rent-free apartment, with free telephone, came with the job. Absolutely ideal. I had working hours that only God could have arranged. The evangelism
could be done when the teeming crowds were out - at lunchtime and in the evening city rush hour. How? By preaching to them while they were a captive
audience at traffic lights. I also had a placard, held aloft. It lasted from 1983 to 1988.

God met my needs wonderfully in those years. People would give banknotes on the street, though I never asked for money. $50, $20, $10 or $5. One lunchtime on the street corner I met a believer from the United States. I invited him for dinner that night and when leaving he pulled out a $US100 note and said: "God told me to give you this." These happenings did wonders for my faith. I saw Philippians 4:19 come alive. People also gave household goods - even a small TV!

Now, years later, I'm retired, and have all the time I need to write and work for God with no concern about money. Praise the Lord for His faithfulness! A faithful God who will supply all of our needs. Today, will you trust God to provide for you?
