Have You Accepted God's Gift of Love, Salvation through His Son Jesus Christ? Tell Me More
Love is Patient
- 1 Corinthians 13:4-6
Sometimes in life, we forget what the important things mean to us. We forget that God gave us blessings such as a house, church, safety, and family and friends; especially those who are the closest to us. We often forget their worth and take them for granted. We fail to see the good that they've done for us because we are too busy focusing on negative things (Philippians 4:8).
In relationships, arguments are typical, and in one argument me and my fiancee had, he asked me why I lose my temper with him easily. I replied "because I love you and I am sensitive with the things you do." But then his very simple words challenged me,"no," he said, "love is patient."
Out of the whole argument, that stuck to me the most. When you love someone, you are not easily angered with them, you are patient with them. I was showing the opposite and I failed to display Biblical love towards him (Galatians 5:22).
Have you ever been in this situation where the people that you love anger you the most easily (Proverbs 15:13)? Think about how God's love is, even though we have sinned against Him, He's so patient with us, and He isn't easily angered (Exodus 34:6). Instead of being so easily angered with us, He sent His Son to die for us because God loves us so much, He made a sacrifice, he gave his only Son to the world (John 3:16). Love is sacrificing, and when you love someone, you put their needs before yours... even if they've hurt you or angered you, be patient with them because love is patient.
I challenge you to look at your relationships with others and examine your love for them. Ask yourself if you love them Bibically and unconditionally, or if you love them when you feel like it, depending on circumstances and how they treat you. Always remember this, God loves you even though you're a sinner (Romans 5:8).
I've been in a relationship for 9 years now, Since 15. No engagement, no romance, and I depend on him for everything! We're fading apart. I'm scared and always feeling alone. He knows that, says he loves me but is ready to move on if need be. I'm stuck in my own fear.
Response: Elaine, someone who truly loves you isn't "ready to move on if need be." Instead, someone who really loves you would do everything they could to salvage this relationship. Remember, love is patient... but love is also not self-seeking (as your boyfriend is doing). I know this is very hard, and I can tell that you really care about him... I would recommend some pastoral counseling to see if this relationship can be salvaged... but most importantly, keep your faith in God, and know that no matter what He has something great planned for you, and you will never be alone.
The same happened to me. I prayed daily for patience and so many things happened to test the patience I had. Today I am about 70% more patient. There is reasons sometimes to hold us back.
I wish I could learn more patience. Someone once told me if I pray for patience God would send me a lot of things to teach me patience. Oh boy did he too. lol. But I still have no patience.
This is very true... I have a hard time not getting angry at loved ones because I expect more from them, and so it hurts more when they let us down... I'm guessing just like it hurts God when we let Him down. Really good reminder that true love IS patient, no matter what.
