Taste and See
O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
- Psalms 34:8
- Psalms 34:8
"No one knows how sweet honey is till he tastes it, and even so the sweetness of true religion cannot be learned by mere hearing, we must try it for ourselves. O Lord, help all in this family to prove the power of faith in Jesus, and the efficacy of prayer to God for themselves." - C.H. Spurgeon
That quote comes from a giant in the world of evangelism, the 19th century preacher Charles Spurgeon. Just recently my pastor's wife expressed to me the importance of daily devotions in such a way that very closely mimicked the words of this great evangelist.
She said that we can explain to someone how juicy and delicious a steak from our favorite restaurant is, but until they go and try it for themselves they just won't get a taste for it. The same is true, she said, about doing daily devotions. Until someone starts doing them and sees the power of God's word at work in their lives they just won't get a taste for it.
That is why I join in Peter's call on the believer:
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. (1 Peter 2:2-3 KJV)
Because it is only by the "milk" or the "meat" of the word of God that we will grow in the Spirit, renew our minds daily, and see how good He really is.
