Why Doesn't God Answer All My Prayers???
This question reminded me of a story I had heard, about a little boy who was 6 years old.
How often are we like the little boy... When our father doesn't give us the answer we want to hear we get angry and question him. We question if he really pays attention, if he really cares, and sometimes if he is really an all-powerful God.
But just like the father in this story, God HAS a reason for the things he does. Sometimes he doesn't give us the answer we want because he wants to protect us from ourselves (just like the little boy could have been severely hurt or killed by the shotgun).
Sometimes God wants us to grow more, or prove that we are ready for what we are praying for.
Sometimes God wants us to take the first few steps... to show that we are ready to obey him.
And sometimes the answer is "no."
But ALL THE TIME, God is listening, and caring for you. As the old saying goes:
"God doesn't always give you what you want, but he always gives you what you need."
All this boy ever wanted was a shotgun so he could go hunting with his father... and one day he asked his father if he would buy him one. His father busy at work didn't even look up. The boy again asked, but his father paid no attention.
The boy asked again, and again... but his father always ignored the question, paying him no attention. The more the boy asked, the more angry at his father he became. Why didn't his father just buy him a shotgun? The anger eventually grew to dislike... and dislike to hate. The boy started avoiding his father completely, disobeying him, and saying things behind his back. This continued for years, until just a few days before his 16th birthday, when his father passed away.
The boy still angry with his father had nothing to say at the funeral... and as soon as it was over went home to rummage through his father's possessions to see what could be of use to him. As he dug through his father's things he found an envelope attached to a large box. Curious, he opened the box to find a brand new shotgun... Speechless he opened the envelope and read the letter silently to himself:
"I know you wanted this shotgun when you were 6, but I knew then you were not ready for it. Through the years you asked me again and again, but you were never quite ready. I am proud to say that now you are becoming a man, and one I could not be more proud of.
Love Always, Your Father."

Thank you for this devotion. It has really helped me. I am going through a lot right now and I don't know why, but I know God has a good reason. Almost a year ago, my close friend and Youth Minister went in view of a call to another church. He was one of the only people I felt like I could talk to after my cousin died. Then, our church hired a new Music Minister a little over 1 1/2 years ago. As we began spending time together at youth events and choir practice, he became my best friend. Last night, he announced he resigned to go in view of a call to another church, also. It felt as if everytime I get close to someone, they leave. I was very upset last night and have still been upset throughout the day. I'm not sure why God allowed this to happen, but I trust Him and I know He has a reason. I know that my friend needs to follow where God is leading them. I pray that God would allow me to stay in touch with him, and I know He will help me with this. I also pray for God to take of both of them as they are following His will. I may never know why God called them to another church, but He knows the reason and I trust Him to take care of all of us.
